Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project – a literal dream come true – Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.

Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school – archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away.

But when her equipment starts to go missing and the staff ignore her, Bee could swear she sees Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas… devouring her with those eyes. The possibilities have all her neurons firing.

But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there’s only one question that matters: What will Bee Königswasser do?

Short summary ~5 minutes

Bee is a neuroscientist that gets a dream job working at NASA on a project with Levi, who she knew in the past and was always cold towards her. She is ecstasic but then problems keep happening, Bee thinks it’s Levi but turns out it was his boss. She thinks he is married, he is not. He thinks she is married, she is not. After a trip, they become closer and start a romantic realtionship after Levi reveals that he was cold in the past because he had a major crush on her. Things are going well but then their projects goes bad. Turns out a co-worker has sabotaged them for revenge, he is stopped and Bee continues to work for NASA with Levi happily. There is also a side story of her friend and their relationship as well as Bee’s annoymous alter ego online as a woman in Stem.

Long sumary ~ 20-25 minutes

The story is told through the main character’s, Bee, point of view. 

Bee is an avid fan of Marie Curie and starts the story, as well as mid points in the story, with random facts about her life that also relate to Bee’s own personal life. Including that she was once engaged but that her friend slept with her fiance.  She explains that she has been hired for a job with NASA as a co-lead on a project with collaboration with NIH( National Institute of Health), where she works. She then realizes that it is with an old colleague Levi Ward. She talks to her twin sister, Reiki, about it who lives in Europe doing odd jobs. She reminisces about particular times in graduate school where he seemed cold and avoided her, also how after she was engaged that how her fiance could do better.  Since graduate school, Levi’s career has been doing well and how the new project will include her field of neuroscience. Her career is not doing as well and she thinks the NASA project will help. 

Bee and her research assistant, Rocio, head to Houston for the project for three months. Rocio is obsessed with morbid things and although has a boyfriend in Maryland, is happy to be a part of it. Bee reveals that she is the anonymous head of a secret twitter account of @WhatWouldMarieDo(WWMD), which is centered around the ideas and problems of females in STEM. She started the account in grad school and has grown to have a lot of followers and support. She has a friend on the account which she DMs frequently. She tells him about her new job/project and he tells her about he is about to meet a girl he knew from a long time ago but is now married. 

She arrives and is eager to look around before she officially starts so she heads over to the building and wonders if she can go in to which she is told she needs a badge. Which she does not have, however a man who has overheard the conservation and recognizes her name. He is Guy, an astronaut connected to the project. He offers to show her around and they chat about life including that she is a vegan. They are walking through the hallway when Guy gets a phone call, which he takes and walks away. Bee is looking around when she hears and sees a cat. She pets it and the cat turns away and jumps on some boxes. The boxes move and then tumble onto Bee, who then panics but then is saved when someone pushes her out of the way. After she calms down,  she realizes that Levi is now carrying her and then she faints. 

Bee explains that fainting is pretty common for her, and it is nothing medically serious. The next day, she meets Rocio and they have a formal tour with Guy, who shows them a lot of empty rooms because the equipment they requested is not there yet. Guy says he will mention the lack of equipment to Levi who they are supposed to meet. Then they see the prototype for the helmet that they will be working on. The helmet is supposed to combine neuroscience and engineering to make a helmet that will help astronauts perform quicker and more efficiently. She then immediately finds a problem with the helmet and criticizes Levi’s work on them, without knowing that he was standing right there. She feels incredibly awkward but they all go to a meeting together. They meet Boris who is the head of all of the projects and therefore the boss. Boris makes everyone introduce themselves along with their favorite movie. Levi has the same favorite movie as Bee, and also took the only vegan donut that was available. There is only one other girl there named Kaylee who is the project manager. Bee then talks to Levi and says thanks for his help and that it happened because of a cat. However he seems unconvinced that there really was a cat.. They make awkward small talk about their past then he asks about Tim, her ex-fiance. She thinks this is mean since she knows Levi and Tim have worked together and should know they called off their wedding and why. She asks about their missing equipment and he says they are working on it and to arrange meets through the email. He then mentions that the building has a dress code, which includes piercing( she has a septum ring),and   hair colors (hers is pink).She then counters and says she saw several men not dressing appropriately.

Throughout the upcoming week, none of the equipment arrives and their ids do not work. Guy says it is due to authorizations. Bee confronts Levi, to which he says they are working on it and there is nothing she can do. Bee reveals to Rocio that they used to know each other.  Rocio says their past might be related to what is happening now and that she should ask the twitter WWMD, unknowing that Bee runs it. Bee talks to her sister and she is slightly convinced Levi is sabotaging her. 

Bee then gets a call from her NIH boss, Trevor, who wants updates on the suits, Bee explains that the helmets are not ready and she hasn’t started due to lack of equipment.  Trevor explains that his own boss, Kramer, wants updates and results and if she can’t provide any then she will be kicked and a different neuroscientist will be sent. Bee is then nervous so she calls the company herself to ask about the equipment and learns the order was canceled. Kaylee then comes by asking why Bee wasn’t at the meeting that was sent through the email. Bee decides to confront Levi about the equipment and the unanswered emails. Levi gives vague answers and assures her that he is working on it and that it’s complicated and he has answered all her emails. She is angry and says she will go over him and will talk to Boris which Levi says is not a good idea. She storms off to go to talk to Boris but then meets Rocio who has once again failed the GRE. Bee tries to comfort her by offering to tutor her. Then she goes to Boris’s office but overhears Levi inside. 

At first Bee thinks that Levi is talking badly about her and it is revealed that he canceled the order because it was the wrong piece of equipment. Boris then reveals that NASA does not want NIH to play a larger role so they do not have access to the patents when they succeed. Levi knows that NASA can’t do the job alone since Bee is the best neuroscientist. Boris then insinuates that the project won’t be done. Levi leaves and sees Bee outside the office. They discuss what happened and then Bee thinks to tell NIH about it, Levi says she can but it probably would mean the project would never get done either. Bee tells Levi he should have been honest about NASA because of her suspicions of sabotage since he despises her. He denies that he despises her and Bee does not believe him. She then reminds him of his past actions toward her and then gets upset and leaves after deciding to tell her boss everything. Later on at home, she has another discussion online with her friend about her troubles and issues being non-specific. He comforts her and confesses he still likes the married girl.

Bee wakes up to her phone ringing and it’s Levi with an idea to save the project. She rushes to the office and Levi does not explain beforehand and asks her to follow his lead. Levi confronts Boris and claims that another company, MagTech, is also working on the same helmet and has pictures with blueprints. Levi insists that if their own project is delayed, then the other company will make it first along with the patents. Levi believes it can be completed in three months if Bee has the right equipment. Boris reluctantly agrees and then goes to meet with his own boss. Bee and Levi then talk about their past and Bee is convinced that Levi still hates her, but they can work together. Levi still insists he does not hate her and Bee is unconvinced and says she is okay with it. Kaylee interrupts and Levi leaves. Later Levi texts her saying the emails are unreliable and the equipment is coming. 

While working on the project, Bee tries to work with other members who dismiss her ideas and Levi defends her. She is suggesting drastic changes from the original prototype that seems to have some personal significance to the members. Later while Bee is alone, she sees the cat again. It leaves while Levi comes and he doesn’t seem to believe her about the cat. While Bee talks to Rocio, Rocio seems to have a nonsense hatred of Kaylee and Bee relates it to Levi. Rocio is unconvinced since he looks at her a lot. Bee talks to her online friend again, and they give updates on their life, including personal details about their past toxic relationships. 

Bee is embarrassed to run around the space center so she goes for a job in the local cemetery. She is exhausted and sits down to rest, when she decides to leave she notices all the gates are locked and she panics. First she tries to call Rocio, who does not answer her phone. Then out of desperation, she calls Levi who immediately comes to her aid. 

He brings a ladder and they successfully get her out. He then drives her home but she realizes she left her keys inside the cemetery.  He then offers his own house, but Bee, under the assumption he is married with a child, is hesitant but sees no other option. Once they get to her house, she sees no evidence of the family and asks about it. He says he is not married and that the picture she saw on his desk of a little girl is of a friend he sometimes babysits. Bee also then realizes he is also vegan, and that he has a cat himself.  They have a lovely dinner and she realizes it was not so bad.

Bee does some experiments with Guy and gets good reactions from her male coworkers. Later Guy and Levi have lunch with Bee and Guy asks Bee on a date. Levi then points out Bee has a ring on, unknowing that it is her grandmother’s ring. Guy then apologizes and asks about her presumed husband, Tim. Later Bee is having a tutoring session for Rocio for her GREs, Rocio overthinks the problems and they are interrupted by Kaylee. Kaylee mentions how the GREs are biased and offers to tutor her. Bee mentions this on her twitter. 

Bee is working in the lab and needs a certain file that she insists is not on the computer. Levi insists that it is and they make a bet about it. Levi sees that it was there but removed. He mentions this has happened some other times. Boris interrupts them to tell them that MagTech is going to a conference to possibly show off their helmet, and orders them to go to “spy”. Levi then says he will discipline his team for the missing files and Bee disagrees saying it must be a joint decision. 

Bee’s tweet about the GRE becomes viral and several people ask for an interview. She talks to her online friend. He explains he is still pining over the married girl and goes on telling how much he loves the girl. Bee then realized that Levi called the disciplinary meeting she asked not to and they had a small argument and he left. 

During the road trip to the conference, Bee is angry at Levi but shortly into it, he apologizes. They talk about music, and roadkill which leads to Bee’s childhood in Europe. Since her parents died when she was young, her and her sister moved around a bit from relative to relative. Levi then talks about his own family and how is a bit of an outcast since they are all military. At the conference they talk to a bunch of people and Levi mentions that he saw her old friend. Bee panics when she sees her and her ex, Tim, then faints.

In Levi’s hotel room, Bee reveals about her past with Annie and Tim. Bee was supposed to work at Vanderbilt with Annie and Tim but they had a falling out because Annie slept with Tim. Levi realizes that she is not actually married and they decide to not go to the conference that day. Instead they go for a run because Levi will train for the 5K since she lost the bet. During dinner they talk about Levi’s cat and Bee asks about Guy. Levi reveals that Guy would have been the team leader but Levi transferred instead and that Guy was never in space since he failed his screening. Levi then reveals that in order to be closer to his family, Levi applied as well but failed since he was too tall and he is grateful for it. Back at the hotel, they watch Star Wars and Levi says if she is uncomfortable with Tim then she can hold his hand. 

At the conference they see that Magtech is farther ahead than they thought they were and want to head back to the office to work. Before they head out, they run into an old advisor who invites them to a brunch, which they reluctantly agree to. At the brunch they do meet Tim and Levi whispers something to him that scares him. As Bee is in the bathroom, she is confronted by her old friend Annie. They make small talk and then Annie apologizes for the past, saying that she was maybe jealous of Bee, and it was a mistake. She tells Bee how happy she is with Levi and hopes to be able to contact Bee in the future. 

In the car ride back, they talk about Tim and Levi confesses that he never thought she was ugly, but the opposite. That’s why he had problems talking to her, saying it was hard to think with her so close. He reveals that Tim lied to him and said Bee knew and it made her uncomfortable. He is about to say something when they are interrupted by a phone call from Boris asking them to come into the office. Turns out Rocio and Kaylee were caught having sex in their office. While talking about the pair on the way to her apartment, Bee has a revelation about the helmets. They realize they can fix the problem they are having and have a working prototype soon. They are both super excited and they end up kissing. They are interrupted by a phone call and he has to leave, but gives her a quick kiss before he does.

Levi takes a personal day, and Bee and Rocio talk about an article for the GREs. Later Bee tells her sister about the kiss, and tries to play it off as nothing. Levi comes over and says that he was taking care of the friend and her daughter who has epilepsy and that the father died a year ago in an accident. Bee realizes it is someone close to him and is who the prototype is named after. Levi reveals that it was a friend since kindergarten and he was one that got Levi into engineering. That is why the project is so important to Levi and they kiss again which leads to sex.

They have a working prototype and everyone is excited. Boris plans to invite important people to the demonstration which Guy will test. He also asks about her interests afterwards and hints at a possible job at NASA. Bee waits for Levi to pick her up for dinner and she chats with her online friend who congratulates her on her success of the GRE discussion and to say he is going out on a date with his girl. Bee is confused since the girl is supposed to be in a relationship but doesn’t say anything. Bee is convinced that the dinner with 

Levi is not a date but that she had a great time. They reminisce about the times in grad school where she thought Levi hated her but instead he explains all the situations. Including the most recent one of the dress code, he reveals Boris wanted to possibly get rid of Bee since he did not like the NIH involvement. Back at Levi’s place, they talk about his cat, and Bee’s cat that Levi thinks is imaginary. Bee reveals that she can’t ever have a cat because she would be too sad when they pass, since the end is unavoidable for all relationships. Levi tries to counter argue but she is unconvinced. They have another round of sex.    

Levi suggests that Bee moves in but she is hesitant and refuses. When they are making breakfast, Bee brings up that they will not end badly because they are casual. Levi gets a phone call and they go to hang out with Levi’s friend and child. Bee plays with the girl and she brings out a spider toy that makes Bee faint. As they leave, they mention that Levi’s parents will be in town and Bee asks to join. Levi warns her it will be bad but she insists.

Rocio and talk about the GRE movement and the twitter that (unknowingly) Bee is in charge of and Bee tries to avoid the subject.  Levi’s parents pick a meat restaurant and Levi says he will make dinner afterwards, and Bee says she will do “stuff” later.  Levi’s family is cold and dismissive and tries to get Levi to join the military. Bee stands up for him but it turns into an awkward dinner. After Bee is surprised that Levi turned out so well and that she really likes him so he can be himself. 

Right before the demonstration  of the project, Bee gets a lot of twitter notifications about how the WWMD has betrayed the science community for money and sees messages between her WWMD account and a person she has never chatted with.  Rocio is upset about the situation and mentioned how she argued with Guy about whether or not Bee is married. Her online friend says he believes her.  Bee gets an email to cease her harassment as WWMD.

Bee avoids Levi and says there is a personal matter. She has to pick up her boss from the airport who has come to see the demonstration.  At the demonstration, Guy is in the helmet and everything is going well but suddenly it goes wrong and has a seizure. Boris wants to know what happened but both Levi and Bee are confused. They guess of different possibilities but Bee’s boss thinks that she was the problem and suggests that they replace her. She accepts it and leaves. 

At her apartment, Bee is sad at the idea of losing both NASA and her online persona, and she starts to pack. Levi comes over to talk about and explains that Guy is alright and then sees her suitcase. He gets upset that she is giving up, she says there is nothing to stay for. Levi is upset and confesses that he loves her. She is hopeful of the possibility of a lifetime with him but also thinks it will be worse if it ends. He leaves but gives her something before he goes. 

Bee wants to take care of things so emails Rocio saying that she should stay on. Then she tries to message her online friend when she notices that his profile pic looks very similar to Levi’s cat in the kitchen she knows. She realizes Levi is her online friend and the girl he mentioned was her. She then looks at the thing he left which was a usb. On it, she sees surveillance video of her cat that Levi insisted was imaginary. While watching some of the videos, she sees that her computer is on with Twitter up. She is curious and wants  to see more footage but Levi is not answering so she just goes to the building instead at 11 at night. In her office, she notices that Twitter has her password saved and someone has logged in. She is trying to think of who when Guy comes in. Bee apologizes about everything but realizes he should be resting instead of the office that late. Guy then confesses that he messed up the project so that Levi would leave and that he messed with Twitter because he was upset that Levi said she was married but they were actually together.  He explains how he got access and then pulls out a gun. He says that he won’t shoot her but make her jump off the roof. Bee’s office cat suddenly growls and then attacks Guy. Bee runs away and then hears loud noises. She sees Guy and Levi wrestling on the floor and Bee kicks Guy in the ribs which helps Levi control the situation. Bee then faints. 

Bee wakes up in the hospital with Rocio and Kaylee. Soon Boris and Levi come and apologize and explain that everything will be taken care of and she is welcome to stay. All except Levi leave and they talk about their online personas and how they both didn’t know it was each other. He leaves when the doctor comes and both are unsure of their relationship. When she leaves the hospital and goes to her office to pick something up.  She then goes to Levi’s and asks if his cat wouldn’t mind if they had another cat, the one she caught from her office. 

It ends with them together in an epilogue, getting married although Levi proposed several times and ends up when Bee proposing in front of a courthouse in a surprise. Her sister has come to visit to support her, and there is also a race for the twitter cause. Bee reveals that it was weird to no longer be anonymous on twitter but it was okay, that she now lives there working with NASA and the helmet project was a success.   

My review- 4.5/ stars

This was a fun cute story. My favorite trope is enemies to lovers, so this was good. It was very obvious from the beginning what the plot was and it was also similar to the other story ” Love Hypothesis .” Overally a fun, easy read with a surprising bit of spice.
